With the creation of the carpet, the invention of the carpet cleaning machine wasn’t far away. The very first hand held carpet cleaner was designed and tested in Chicago in 1860, while the first power operated vacuum cleaner was invented in the 1900s by Cecil Booth.
Around the same time Cecil Booth finished his invention, a man by the name of James Spangler came up with his own invention – a vacuum cleaner that he later sold to his cousin Hoover. As everyone knows, Hoover has since became one of the most dominant names in the world of vacuum cleaners and is certainly one of the most popular household names in the world.
For many housewives, the vacuum cleaner was deemed a blessing, as it helped to keep the house clean in a fraction of the time. From the beginning, vacuum cleaners were only able to suck up dust and dirt, although with modern technology these days, inventors are able to design wet cleanes that can steam carpets and kill germs at the same time.
Carpet is capable of covering the floor of a house, flat, or bungalow and keeping people’s feet warm in the winter. Years ago, people needed to sweep their floors or carpets, but with the invention of the vacuum cleaner, people could easily detract the dust and dirt from their carpets with less effort. It was also determined that businesses, corporations, and apartments would need someone to clean their carpets as well, so the invention of the commercial carpet cleaner wasn’t far away.
Vacuum cleaners operate by using a pump system. The pumping system will suck up the air from a hose, which will in turn suck up the dirt and dust from anything that stands in front of the house opening. On the inside, the vacuum cleaner is a filtering system that will collect the dust and dirt that can later be placed outside in the garbage.
Right now, there are seven main types of vacuum cleaners – the upright, canister, back pack style, built in, robotic, hand held, and the wet/dry vacuum cleaners. These different types of vacuum cleaners are available in a variety of different styles, sizes, and offer various voltage and power sizes as well.
One of the most significant developments in vacuums has been the invention of the very popular cyclone carpet cleaner. Unlike the previous vacuum cleaners, the cyclone collects dirt and dust in a large cylinder. The cyclone operates using a central air force and number of filters. The filter will filter the dust and dirt into stages, so that the air being sucked up into the cylinder can be cleaned then released back into the air through a central outlet.
Anyone who has experience with carpet knows the types of accidents that can happen. Carpet is very common with most houses these days, making the risk for accidents and spills higher than ever. No matter what the spill may be, mud, blood, or milk – there are ways to clean everything.
At your local department store or grocery store, there are several products that you can pick up that will work great. The only problem with these products is the fact that they are normally very vague with how you should use them.
The first thing you should know is that if you have a red stain on your carpet, you shouldn’t try to get this out yourself, but instead leave it to a pro. There are certain procedures and very effective methods that your local carpet cleaning company can do to save you from ruining your carpet.
Keep in mind that red is the toughest stain to get out. A professional carpet cleaner is the way to go, as he is properly trained and equipped to handle them.
For everything else, there is always an effective and cheap way to clean spots on both your carpet and the upholstery. If you are only buying the products that work for you, then you aren’t paying much attention to the label or the technique in getting the stains out.
The first thing to do is go to your local Auto Zone or auto parts store and pick up the auto upholstery and carpet cleaner in the can. Tuff Stuff is one of the best you can get. Almost all cleaners that come in a can are foaming cleaners, which will make your work a lot easier.
The foam in these canned cleaners will penetrate the fibers upon contact and as it foams, it will release and suspend the stains and soils. You may need to lightly scrub the areas with a towel or soft bristled brush.
To help you clean the spots, the tips below may come in handy:
- You should only use white rags or towels when you clean carpet and upholstery to reduce the risk of ruining colors or color transfer.
- You should use foaming cleaners to clean your entire upholstery, even though it may state to dry clean only.
- You should always test your product of choice first on a hidden area to save yourself heartache and embarrassment in case things don’t turn out the way you hope.
- If you need the help of a professional, you shouldn’t hesitate to contact one.
As long as you don’t have a red stain in the carpet, you shouldn’t have any problems getting it out. Stains and spots are a carpet’s worst enemy, which is why you should always get them out as soon as you can – to prevent things from getting any worse.
Although vacuum cleaning can remove a majority of the dry soil, it is also necessary to clean your carpet on a frequent basis to remove the oily, sticky soil that builds up in the pile as a result of odors and dirt that is tracked in from outside.
If you can clean the carpet before it becomes too bad, the cleaning chore will be easier to do and a lot more successful. There is a myth that is totally false, which states that cleaning the carpet before it is necessary will get it dirtier faster. The carpet with the typical household should be cleaned every 12 – 18 months depending on the number of people living there and the amount of traffic that walks on the carpet.
The choice of the right vacuum is important as well. There are some vacuums that will leave residues behind, which will promote re-soiling and basically defeat the whole purpose of household cleaning.
Professional carpet cleaners It is in your best interest to use professional cleaners simply because their experience will enable them to do a much better job than you can do yourself. The equipment they use has more extraction power than the units available to you, and the carpet will dry faster as well. They know the cleaning agents to use, and they know the differences in carpet construction and fibers.
Doing it yourself If you have made the decision to rent a steam cleaning machine and do the job yourself, you should check on several systems before you make a selection. Most of the units available for rent don’t clean well enough and may end up damaging your carpet. Therefore, you should always consider the following:
- Several rental companies offer cleaning equipment that is similar to what the professionals use. The equipment should have enough vacuum power to allow the carpet to dry within 12 hours of cleaning. You should always avoid rental units found in retail and grocery stores that don’t have the power to extract the cleaning solution from the carpet fast enough, as it can actually damage the carpet due to over wetting.
- Make sure you avoid over wetting the carpet. Any prolonged dampness can lead to mildew growth and bacteria in the carpet, or cause a seperation of the backing. A wet carpet that stays this way for longer than 24 hours can develop problems. You can control this by using proper equipment and the right training.
- Carpets that have stain resistant treatments have to be cleaned with products that are formulated for this very purpose, or the stain resistance will be impaired and the warranty will be voided. Never use cleaning or spotting solutions that contain bleaches as they can mess up the color of the carpet. Never use any silicone based treatments on the carpet.
- You can help to reduce the drying time by using several fans to move the air around the carpet. You can use a dehumidifier as well, as it will pull moisture from the air.
Hot water extraction
The hot water extraction system is highly recommended, as it considered to be one of the best methods
for carpet cleaning. Also known as steam cleaning, the process consists of spraying a mixture of water and detergent into the pile and recovering the water and soil with a powerful vacuum that puts it into a holding tank. The carpeting in your house was likely a large investment, which was made to make your home more comfortable and attractive. It’s a fact that rugs and carpets get dirty and stained and there are many approaches to carpet cleaning, depending on the type of carpet you have and the kind of problems that needs to be dealt with. If you have some stains or problem areas due to high traffic, then you might want to consider calling in professional carpet cleaners to help restore the look and feel of your floor coverings.
There are several different routes that a homeowner can take to get their rugs and carpets cleaned and to remove stubborn stains, such as a pet stain. There is carpet cleaning equipment that a homeowner can purchase and also carpet cleaning machines that can be rented. This can be a good approach if you enjoy the “do-it-yourself” method for getting things done around the house; it can save you money as well.
However, many people don’t want to buy and store their own carpet cleaning equipment, nor do they want to rent it and have to lug it back and forth to the store. Instead, they would rather have professional carpet cleaners come to their home to deal with the cleaning issues.
A professional carpet cleaning service will bring much more than just the equipment to properly clean and care for the rugs and carpets in your home. They also will have a variety of different types of cleaning supplies for different purposes and the different situations that they might encounter in your home. They will have carpet cleaning and shampooing formulas, as well as mixtures and solutions for various types of stains that have probably accumulated on your carpeting.
Even more important than the equipment and the cleaning compounds that professional carpet cleaners bring is the expertise and experience that they have. Frankly, there is more to cleaning carpets than just getting a carpet cleaning machine and filling it with the solution that is going to be used.
If you use the wrong type of chemicals in the cleaning solutions for the carpeting without knowing what can and cannot be used with the specific fibers in your rugs and carpets, then you could end up doing a great deal of damage and even ruining the carpet entirely. When you hire a professional carpet cleaning service you are also paying for their knowledge, as they will know what is safe to use on your carpets and rugs, and they will bring the correct chemicals and cleaners with them.
The professional carpet cleaners have special training in testing the carpet in an isolated area, so they will know exactly how the fibers in the floor covering will respond to the cleaning chemicals. These factors should make it a simple decision to call a professional carpet cleaning company to let them do the backbreaking work and to make sure that everything goes smoothly.

Have you heard it said that anyone can do any job if they have the right tools? That might be a stretch but it is safe to say anyone can do a better job with the proper tools.
Important vacuum cleaner facts
Heading this list of carpet care tips is having a proper vacuum. Getting yourself the best vacuum you can afford is the single most important step you can take in providing the care your carpeting needs.
The carpet industry is now rating vacuum cleaners to help you make an informed buying decision. Criteria has been set for soil removal, air filtration, and damage to carpet fibers. Machines that pass the test can display the Carpet and Rug Institute Green Label seal of approval.
Better vacuuming guaranteed
Have you ever heard of a carpet groomer? Probably not, but there are a few of them on the market for about twenty dollars. A carpet groomer will help you get the most out of your vacuum cleaner by preparing your carpets for cleaning. Work a carpet groomer over your carpeting to raise deeply embedded dirt.
Because there is more contact with the carpet, it is tempting to set the rotating power brushes of your vacuum’s cleaning head to a low level. That might seem reasonable, but did you know the contact is more damaging than helpful? The integrity of the carpet fibers can be destroyed, causing wear areas to look dirtier than they really are.
If you have Berber carpets don’t vacuum them with the power cleaning attachment. The rotating brushes can catch on the looped pile and pull long strands away from the carpet backing. This is especially true if there are any seams in your installation.
Check the condition of your power head at regular intervals. Loose or worn brushes, gouged or otherwise damaged plastic parts, or other obvious problems can cause abrasive damage to carpet fibers. Carpet fibers that have been nicked and cut loose luster, are more easily pressed down under traffic, and allow increased dirt penetration of the fiber.
By vacuuming the pathway from entry doors daily, other areas of the home will need less frequent care. Now that may seem to you to be a lot of extra work, but it could actually mean less. By concentrating on the dirtiest areas the cleaner ones won’t need to be vacuumed as often. Your whole carpet will look better.
Did you know regular and thorough vacuuming with a quality, air filtering vacuum will rid your carpeting and upholstery, of more than 80% of the dirt and allergens lurking about?
The make up of household dirt
Do you have any idea what kinds of dirt and grime are being harbored in your carpeting? Several reliable sources have done breakdowns, and it looks something like this:
Sand 40%
Oxides 20%
Organic and synthetic fibers 20%
Oils and Resins 9%
Carbon 5%
Animal fats 4%
Moisture 2%
Vacuum cleaning can take care of the first three and some of the carbon and moisture. Other cleaning methods have to be used to get after the others.
More things you can do to about staying clean
Always use your range hood to reduce the amount of oils, fats and carbon that make it into the air and land on your carpet.
Pet dander and feathers are major allergens. Keep forced air heating and air conditioning system filters clean and efficient by changing them regularly. Are you aware most major carpet manufacturers require professional carpet to be performed every 12 to 18 months in order to maintain your warranty?
A foul smelling carpet makes your whole house smell bad. There are many natural enzyme deodorizers on the market that actually gobble up the organic matter that is the source of the odor.
Other enzyme compounds combine with cleansers to consume organic stains such as blood, juice, wine, coffee, urine and other pet stains. You may have to make several applications of hungry enzymes to take over for the inactive ones that have become full, but keep at it until your carpet is fresh and clean.Always use white towels for cleaning. With colored towels you run the risk of transferring the dye to your carpet.
- Always clean up fresh blotches by scraping from the outside edge inward toward the center. This way you will not be extending the soiled area.
- Hot water helps to set stains not remove them, so never use it.
- For nail polish, carefully blot as much as possible while still in it’s liquid state. If it is too late, slowly apply nail polish remover, blot then apply more remover, alternating back and forth until you get it all.
- Greasy or gummy splotches clean up best when cold. Put some ice in a plastic bag and hold it to the blotch until it sets hard through.
- Scrape the hardened mark and then clean the remains with a liquid cleaner.

If you have rug-rats running around your house the way I do. you must be used to having them tearing through every room like cyclones and wreaking all sorts of damage as they go. You always know where they have been. I can follow my daughter through the rooms by the mess she leaves in her wake. Every stain imaginable is left as evidence of where she has been there. Of course, this is upsetting, and I have tried just about everything to make her stay outside and keep her mess there. I haven’t been too successful. So I end up with the inevitable shoe scuffs, soda stains, mud tracks, etc, all through the house. Sometimes it makes you wonder why you wanted children in the first place. But, at least for the next 18 years. I just have to figure out what to do about the spills and smears that end up on the carpet every day.
One solution would be to change the carpet every time the mess got too bad. Not being a millionare, this is not the solution for me. Or perhaps I could have a professional cleaner come in once a week to clean up all the food drink and other stains. Well, that’s outside my budget too. No, I guess like most parents. I have to find a way to clean up the mess myself. The most practical and economical solution is to use a steam cleaner. If you thought steam cleaning was only the purview of cleaning companies, you would be surprised. There are many steam cleaners that are available for the homeowner to buy and use at his own home. The most popular brand is Hoover. I decided to purchase a Hoover steam cleaner even before my daughter became a toddler and started making a mess on her own. The baby mess, with spilled bottles, spit up food and other “acccidents” convinced me that it would be a good investment in the long run, I was warned by other parents about the mess that is inevitable with children, but I had to find out on my own. The almost daily stains that my daughter is responsible for have convinced us that this was the right decision. Even though we have tried to have her be more careful, we are still overwhelmed with stains. Our wonderful steam cleaner, however, gets rid of al the stains, even the most stubborn ones such as coffee (which I can’t blame my daughter for!).
If you are looking for a good steam cleaner. Best Buy has a great selection at the best prices. They even carry the right kind of cleaners to use in the steam cleaner. Another source is to search on the internet for a good steam cleaner. There, you will find a tremendous array of steam cleaners in every price range.
